Americans are swimming in calories, USDA data shows

Sun, 10 Aug 2008 14:11:16 PDT
Last Sunday’s New York Times looked at some recently released data from the USDA Economic Research Service showing that between 1970 and 2006, the amount of food available to the average American grew by 1.8 pounds of food per week. Among the increases were meat and egg consumption (+0.2 pounds per week), fruits (+0.5 pounds), fats (+0.5 pounds), and refined sweeteners (+0.3 pounds; recall the multi-decade trends in my post about HFCS). Ezra Klein converted the results into a chart that simplif

Sex and Pakistan

I came across with this link (http://www.google.com/trends?q=sex) on one of the forums I go to; apparently Pakistan is the top most country which searches for the term “sex”. Seven out of top ten countries are Muslim countries. Quite interesting.

Baidu's revenue doubled to $117 million, as earnings climbed 87% higher to $1.11 a share. Analysts were looking for a profit of just $0.98 a share on $112.5 million.

Italy, BitTorrent under attack. Pirate Bay? Is still here

Sun, 10 Aug 2008 17:12:33 PDT
Thrills have ran across the Internet of the Belpaese during this weekend, when the news have spread about the block of the access to TPB. But upon writing it seems that the storm has already passed away. Maybe it is only the beginning of a long battle between the Financial Guard, incited by the multimedia industry, and the Swedish “pirates"?

Icons: DER SPIEGEL and its Canteen

Sun, 10 Aug 2008 18:48:19 PDT
Last week in Hamburg, Germany, I had the pleasure of lunching with a SPIEGEL editor in the iconic news magazine's iconic canteen, or "Spiegelkantine," as the Germans call it. The extravagance of the interior design (created by Danish designer Verner Panton, who worked with Arne Jacobson, in the 70s) -- a lavish, ultra-red cave with highly disruptive stalactites hanging from the ceiling -- is reminiscent of "Clockwork Orange" and so ostentatiously out of line with the earnest, purist, social d

“Eyewitness News” format: Yes, it sucked back then too

UPDATE: The “starts right now” intro was curtailed in October. The corrected text below reflects change. Pity Natalie Clancy. She’s one of CBC TV News’ rising stars — formerly a reporter in the CBC Vancouver newsroom; today, after a stint co-anchoring at CBC Newsworld in Calgary (and before Calgary turned into Toronto), she’s anchoring the late-night Vancouver at 11 newscast.
